SECU MD NAMED TO NEWSWEEK’S LIST OF AMERICA’S BEST REGIONAL CREDIT UNIONS 2026
BALTIMORE – SECU, Maryland’s largest state-chartered credit union, is proud to announce it has been named to Newsweek’s 2026 list of America’s Best Regional Banks and Credit Unions, for the third year in a row. SECU received top honors with a five-star rating– the only Maryland-based credit union to do so among other Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina-based credit unions named to the list.
The complete list, comprised of the top 500 banks and top 500 credit unions, was selected by Newsweek and market data research firm Plant-A Insights Group after a comprehensive study analyzing all regional financial institutions in the United States, based on assessments of credit quality, profitability, net loans and leases, and press coverage over the past two years. Research also included a large-scale independent customer survey of more than 71,000 U.S. citizens, scoring and categorizing survey responses, millions of social media reviews, and other feedback to comprehensively determine the 500 finalists and their respective starred rankings.
“I am proud that SECU has once again been named to the list of America’s Best Regional Banks and Credit Unions, especially to earn a five-star rating, an achievement that underscores our continued dedication to our members, our employees and our community,” said David Sweiderk, SECU president and CEO. “It is an honor to lead a team that is committed to putting people first in every aspect– from providing equitable financial products and reimagining cutting-edge digital solutions, to ensuring holistic financial wellness resources and education are accessible for all Marylanders.”
SECU was recently named a 2025 Top Workplace by The Baltimore Sun for the fifth consecutive year. SECU President and CEO David Sweiderk was also awarded The Baltimore Sun’s prestigious Leadership Award – one of just three awardees recognized in 2025. The credit union has been named to Forbes’ 2024 list of Best-in-State Credit Unions and received a Future Branches Innovator Award for the implementation of digital-first technologies and rollout of its Virtual Financial Center, a virtual branch created to provide credit union members with extended service hours and the ability to discuss loans, products, and more with SECU financial experts from the comfort of their own home.
