SECU WILL MAKE THREE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS
AVAILABLE THROUGH THE SECU MD FOUNDATION
As part of its ongoing commitment to higher education, SECU will make three scholarship programs available to its members and their families through the SECU MD Foundation.
The oldest of these scholarships, SECU’s State Employee Scholarship Program, makes scholarships ranging from $2,000-$5,000 each available to Maryland State employees and their immediate family members who are planning to attend college, graduate school, or trade school in the fall of 2018.
The SECU-University System of Maryland (USM) Scholarship Program provides scholarships ranging from $2,000-$5,000 each to SECU members who are enrolled or accepted into a University System of Maryland institution for the fall 2018 semester.
Finally, the newest of SECU’s scholarship programs, the recently announced Donald Tynes, Sr. Scholarship Program, offers five $2,000 scholarships to students enrolled in Morgan State University’s Graves School of Business.
The SECU MD Foundation, which will offer all three of these scholarship programs, was recently launched by SECU as a charitable organization whose mission is to contribute to and support the continuous learning and educational needs in the communities served by SECU.
“Through the SECU MD Foundation, SECU remains fully committed to helping our members to become stronger and financially healthier, and ultimately to achieve their dreams, one member and one household at a time,” says Rod Staatz, President and CEO of SECU. Staatz notes that, to date, SECU and the SECU MD Foundation have awarded more than $480,000 in higher education scholarships.
Eligibility for the three scholarships varies by program –
- To be eligible for SECU’s State Employee Scholarship Program, Maryland state employees or members of their immediate families will be required to submit a 500-750 word essay or a two-minute video that discusses Student Financial Literacy. The deadline for entries is April 6, 2018.
- The SECU-USM Scholarship Program is open to all graduating high school seniors, current USM students, and students transferring to any of USM’s 12 institutions for the Fall 2018 semester, provided they are existing SECU members or apply for SECU membership as part of this program. Applicants will be required to submit a 500-750 word essay or a two-minute video on Student Loan Debt by April 6, 2018.
- The Tynes Scholarship Program is open to eligible Morgan State University sophomores, juniors, and seniors enrolled in the Graves School of Business. Students will be required to submit a 500 – 700 word essay or a two-minute video on Commitment and Values by April 6, 2018.
Applications for all three scholarships are available now at www.secumdfoundation.org.
In addition to scholarships, the SECU MD Foundation supports Reality Fairs, financial awareness events designed to give high school students first-hand experience in managing their money and making smart, informed financial decisions that will help them once they graduate from high school and go on to college or jobs in the real world.
The SECU MD Foundation is also the beneficiary of the annual SECU Golf Classic fundraising event.
