A Message From Dave Sweiderk, President and CEO

As 2018 winds down and the holiday festivities get into full swing, I want to thank each of you for being part of the SECU family. While I joined SECU just a few short months ago, I’ve already learned how special it is to be part of this outstanding credit union, with employees and members dedicated to making it a strong, caring institution focused on building better communities together. 

2018 has been a good year. We continued to build relationships with both existing and new members, launched our new online and mobile banking platform, and introduced the SECU MD Foundation, which is dedicated to supporting financial education initiatives to help people get on the path to a secure financial future. Everything we do as a financial institution is focused on improving the lives of our members and our communities, and being a great place to work for our employees. We look forward to continuing to serve you in 2019.

SECU Raises $46,000 in Annual United Way Campaign

As a member-owned credit union, SECU has a long tradition of giving back to the communities we serve. Every fall, we partner with the United Way of Central Maryland for our annual Season of Giving campaign.

This year, we set a goal to raise $38,000 during our six-week campaign, which would top the $37,500 we collected last year. Monetary donations were raised through employee pledges and fundraising activities. We are pleased to announce we surpassed our goal, and raised a total of $39,735. SECU added an additional $6,265, bringing our total donation to $46,000.

“The generosity of our employees will go a long way toward supporting the United Way and their work helping families obtain access to safe and affordable housing, employment opportunities, good healthcare, affordable food, and quality education programs,” said Roderic Flowers, Vice President of Human Resources Development at SECU.

SECU also encourages employees to volunteer at local charities by offering up to 12 paid hours per quarter to volunteer. This helps extend our outreach efforts throughout the year, not just during our special Season of Giving campaign.

“We know that there are those in our communities who are struggling. We see it as our duty to support our communities and give back where we can, both through monetary donations and by volunteering our time,” added Flowers.

SECU MD Foundation Now Accepts Online Donations

SECU launched the SECU MD Foundation earlier this year to help support financial education initiatives throughout our communities, including scholarship programs and Reality Fairs. The Foundation awarded $100,000 in scholarships in 2018, and over 1,000 students learned real-world budgeting at our Reality Fairs, helping to prepare them for life after graduation.

Our Foundation is supported by donations from members like you who want to help people in our communities achieve their dreams through education.

SECU Partners with the Baltimore Blast for the Goals for Kids Program

SECU is once again partnering with 10-time MASL Champion Baltimore Blast in the Goals for Kids Program benefiting the University of Maryland Children’s Hospital. SECU will donate $100 to the hospital for every goal scored in a regular season home game. During last year’s championship season, SECU donated $11,000 through the program.

If you haven’t been to a Baltimore Blast game, it is a great experience for the entire family! The Blast play their home games at SECU Arena on the campus of Towson University. Get tickets here. Cheer on your Blast as they score goals and raise money for the Children’s Hospital!


SECU to Discontinue Selling Traveler’s Cheques and Gift Checks in 2019

Over the past several years, both at SECU and other financial institutions, the use of Traveler’s Cheques and Gift Checks has declined significantly.  Both of these financial products have become outdated as debit and credit card use has increased, ATMs are readily available for your cash needs, and VISA/Mastercard/AMEX gift cards are widely available.  Additionally, some retailers no longer accept Traveler’s Cheques.

Therefore, starting January 1, 2019, SECU will no longer offer Traveler’s Cheques or Gift Checks at any of our Financial Centers. Credit cards offer a more secure solution when traveling, as cards can be replaced if lost or stolen. SECU offers several different credit cards to cover your financial needs when traveling, including a cash back card if you are looking for an alternative solution to Traveler’s Cheques.  Learn more about our credit card solutions. 

Important Notices and Reminders

  • Your SECU Visa® credit and debit cards will automatically be enrolled in the free Visa® Account Updater (VAU) service on December 24, 2018. With VAU, your account files will be automatically updated when information changes because of a card expiration, card replacement, account closure, or other changes to your account information. A participating merchant can access that updated card information before requesting a payment. The benefit is that when you have changes to your account information, you will not have to send updated information to participating merchants where you have saved your card information as a payment method or merchants where you have automatic charges on your account. Since not all merchants participate, you may still need to check with your merchant when your account changes. You are entitled to opt out of this service at any time by calling us at 800-879-7328. If you opt out, you may opt back in if you decide you want the Visa Account Updater service in the future.

  • If you aren’t using SECU’s mobile app, now is a great time to download it to your mobile device and check out all the features. The mobile app goes anywhere with you, which is great during the busy holiday season. It’s available 24/7 so you can do your banking at your convenience from wherever you are. Check balances, pay bills, set alerts, and even make remote check deposits directly from the app. Download it today, and take advantage of having a branch in your pocket.
